La Brenne , appelée « Branna Fluvius » en 1157 puis Braana en 1201 , prend sa source au pied de la montagne de Sombernon et se jette dans l'Armançon, après un parcours de 55 kilomètres.La Brenne reçoit sur la rive droite 13 ruisseaux plus l'Ozerain et l'Oze et 16 sur la rive gauche.
Le long de la rivière des lavoirs étaient aménagés. Les lavandières venaient y laver le linge que les gens aisés leur confiaient.
En 1548, le pont est composé de 10 arches.
L'hôtel de ville était appuyé sur le 4 ème arche mais il fût incendié cette année là .
Dans la nuit du 12 au 13 novembre 1710, les eaux de la rivière en furie emportèrent 6 des 10 arches du pont.
An début du XX siècle il y avait une croix sur le parapet, c'était le point de rendez-vous des amoureux entre le quartier nord et le quartier sud de la ville . Les débris de la croix furent recueillis par le curé Millot et seront stockés dans la chapelle Saint-Paul.
Les inondations de 1910 ont causé d'immenses dégâts : chaussées défoncées, murs renversés... Sur le mur de l'Hôtel de l'Ecu, une flèche gravée marque la hauteur de la crue.

In early twentieth century, there was a cross on the parapet, which was a meeting point for lovers between the north and south of the city. The fragments of the cross were collected by priest Millot and were stored in the chapel of Saint-Paul.
The flood of 1910 caused immense damag. Numerous streets and walls were destroyed. On the wall of the Hotel de l' Ecu, an arrow engraved marks the height of the flood.
